Appellations and terroirs
Located in Urville, in the Aube region (Côte des Bar), the Champagne Drappier estate flourishes on Upper Kimmeridgian limestone soils, identical to those found in Chablis. This ancient terroir, rich in marine fossils, imparts minerality, freshness, and complexity to the wines. The ideal exposure of the slopes, their moderate altitude, and the richness of the subsoil make Urville a prime location for Pinot Noir, the flagship grape of the house.
Iconic grape varieties
Pinot Noir (70%), Pinot Meunier (15%), Chardonnay (9%), Arbane, Petit Meslier, Fromenteau (Pinot Gris), Blanc Vrai (Pinot Blanc)
Philosophy and History
Founded in 1808, Maison Drappier is one of the few estates to have maintained its family independence for over two centuries. Eight generations have succeeded one another, perpetuating the pioneering spirit of François Drappier. As early as the 1930s, Georges Collot, Michel Drappier's maternal grandfather, replanted Pinot Noir in Urville despite the ridicule. His intuition proved correct: this grape variety became emblematic of the estate. In 1965, General de Gaulle chose Champagne Drappier for his personal consumption. Since then, the family has undertaken numerous initiatives, notably the revival of forgotten grape varieties such as Arbane and Fromenteau. Today, Michel Drappier is supported by his children Charline, Hugo, and Antoine, each involved in a different aspect of the estate (sales, viticulture, biodiversity). Together, they embody a new generation, both attached to tradition and deeply committed to environmental responsibility.
Production specifics
The Drappier estate cultivates over 110 hectares of vines, 60 of which are owned by the estate, according to organic farming principles (Ecocert certified). No herbicides or insecticides are used. The soils are worked by hand or with horses to limit compaction and encourage microbial life. The estate has opted for natural winemaking: fermentation with indigenous yeasts selected on-site ("Drappier Fermentum Meum"), no fining or filtration, no animal-derived additives, and extremely low doses of sulfur. Some cuvées, such as the Brut Nature Sans Soufre, contain none at all. The champagnes are aged on their lees in oak casks, demi-muids, or, for the finest vintages of the Grande Sendrée cuvée, in the spectacular wooden egg-shaped "Ovum." The liqueur d'expédition is aged in demijohns for over 15 years to preserve its purity and length.
Recognitions
Champagne Drappier enjoys international recognition for the quality and uniqueness of its cuvées. The Charles de Gaulle cuvée, the Rosé de Saignée, and Quattuor (a blend of four ancient grape varieties) exemplify the richness of its heritage. The estate is featured in leading guides and recommended by sommeliers for the consistency of its vintages and the originality of its approach. Some of its cuvées are served in the finest establishments, including the Élysée Palace.
In addition to its meticulous winemaking, Champagne Drappier distinguishes itself with its exceptional bottles: from half-bottles to the Melchizedek (30 liters), all are riddled and disgorged by hand, a rarity in the region. The estate also experiments with aging in marine immersion, creating comparative cases that highlight the influence of the aging environment on the wine.
Environmental commitments
Drappier is the first Champagne house to have obtained "Carbon Neutral" certification (since 2016). Thanks to 2,000 m² of photovoltaic panels, the estate produces 75% of its electricity needs. Electric tractors replace combustion engine vehicles, a fleet of electric vehicles is deployed, and even visitors can recharge their cars using dedicated charging stations. Michel Drappier also designed a bottle that is 15% lighter, reducing the environmental impact of transportation. Recycling, permaculture, a small farmyard, heritage orchards, and transforming empty bottles into candles: every action contributes to a virtuous cycle of sustainability.
The Drappier family thus offers a coherent, sincere, and exemplary vision of artisanal Champagne, respectful of its terroir and its time. Each bottle tells a story, blending memory, precision, and emotion.
