Wines built to last

Great red wines made from powerful grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvèdre, or Malbec, as well as certain Pinot Noirs, naturally possess aging potential. Similarly, some dry white wines (Chenin Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay meant for aging) and sweet wines exhibit a remarkable ability to develop complex notes of candied fruit, beeswax, truffle, or sweet spices.

Among the leading appellations for aging are Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, Pomerol, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Hermitage, Cornas, Côte-Rôtie, Vosne-Romanée, Meursault, Vouvray, Savennières, and the great Sauternes. These exceptional terroirs, combined with rigorous winemaking expertise, allow for the production of wines whose structure, acidity, and concentration ensure harmonious aging.

How can you tell if a wine is suitable for aging?

A wine meant for aging is often dense and tannic in its youth, with well-integrated acidity, ripe fruit, and a balanced structure. It may seem closed at first, but develops a fascinating array of aromas over the years. Vintages like 2010, 2015, 2016, and 2018 are particularly well-suited for cellaring.
