Pinot gris: an expressive and generous white grape variety

Pinot Gris is a versatile white grape variety, capable of producing dry, medium, or sweet wines depending on the terroir and winemaking style. Primarily cultivated in Alsace, it is also known as Pinot Grigio in Italy. Recognizable by its slightly coppery hue and aromatic richness, it appeals to lovers of round, full-bodied, and elegant white wines.

Origin and emblematic regions

Derived from a mutation of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris originated in Burgundy but has established itself as one of the major grape varieties in Alsace, where it enjoys particular recognition. It is also widely planted in northern Italy (Friuli, Veneto), Germany (under the name Grauburgunder), New Zealand, and the United States. In Alsace, it is classified as one of the four noble grape varieties authorized for Vendanges Tardives (Late Harvest) and Sélection de Grains Nobles (Noble Grapes) wines.

Aromatic profile and diversity of styles

Pinot Gris produces wines with a rich, smooth texture and beautiful aromatic intensity. Its aromas evoke pear, mirabelle plum, apricot, dried fruit, honey, and even smoky and slightly spicy notes. In its dry form, it is perfect with food for its structure and freshness. In its sweet or dessert wine form, it develops exceptional complexity, ideal for special occasions.

Food and wine pairings with Pinot Gris

Dry Pinot Gris wines pair well with a wide variety of dishes: terrines, roast poultry, creamy risottos, fish in sauce, and even some white meats. Sweeter wines are perfect with foie gras, blue cheeses, or fruit desserts. It is a quintessential gastronomic white wine, charming with its balance of richness and freshness.

Les Vins de Carole offers a diverse collection of wines made from the Pinot Gris grape. From dry and off-dry Alsatian wines with precise aromas and a beautiful texture, to richer and more complex cuvées for fine dining.
