Famille Guigal
Rhône Valley – North and South Rhône
Domaine Guigal is located in Ampuis, in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, an iconic terroir of the Northern Rhône Valley. There, they craft exceptional wines from prestigious parcels in the Côte Brune and Côte Blonde, as well as from legendary vineyard sites such as La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne. These steep terroirs, with their schist, granite, and mica schist soils, produce wines of rare intensity and legendary complexity. To the south, Château de Nalys, owned by the estate since 2017, embodies excellence in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with its rolled pebbles, red sandstone, and perfectly situated sandy soils.
Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre (reds); Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne (whites)
Founded in 1946 by Étienne Guigal in Ampuis, an ancient village and the birthplace of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, Maison Guigal is steeped in a thousand-year-old winemaking tradition. Arriving at the age of 14 in 1924, Étienne vinified no fewer than 67 vintages, after honing his skills at Vidal-Fleury. In 1961, his son Marcel took over the reins of the business following his father's blindness. Joined in 1973 by his wife Bernadette, he passionately developed the estate. Their son Philippe, an oenologist, now represents the third generation, alongside his wife Eve. Together, they perpetuate a family legacy of excellence, dedicated to the finest terroirs of the Rhône. The acquisition of Château d'Ampuis in 1995 and then Château de Nalys in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 2017 marks the constant ambition of the estate: to promote the finest appellations of the Rhône Valley, with respect for origin and long-term time.
The grapes are harvested by hand, meticulously sorted, and each plot vinified separately. Long maceration periods, gentle extraction, and extended aging—up to 42 months for some cuvées—in mostly new oak barrels, reveal the full power and finesse of the wines. Ampuis' modern, underground winery, inaugurated in 2003, allows for complete control over the vinification and aging process.
Domaine Guigal is one of the world's most awarded producers. Its La Mouline, La Turque, and La Landonne cuvées regularly receive scores above 98/100 from Robert Parker, Wine Spectator, and James Suckling. The Revue du Vin de France and Bettane+Desseauve guides consistently praise its level of excellence. In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Nalys confirms this high standard with wines that have garnered critical acclaim since their initial release.
A leading name in the Rhône Valley, Domaine Guigal embodies a rare vision: that of a great wine shaped by time, patience, and an intimate understanding of the terroir. Its style combines power, precision, and exceptional aging potential.
