Morgon: the full-bodied and elegant expression of Gamay

Among the ten Beaujolais crus, Morgon is one of the most iconic. This renowned appellation offers red wines made exclusively from the Gamay grape, fully expressing the richness of their terroir. Known for its full-bodied, powerful wines with excellent aging potential, Morgon appeals to wine lovers seeking authenticity and complexity. The Morgon AOC has been recognized since 1936 and benefits from a strong historical presence in the heart of the Beaujolais wine region.

A unique terroir dominated by the Côte du Py

The Morgon vineyards cover approximately 1,100 hectares around the village of the same name, on soils rich in decomposed schist, locally known as "rotten rocks." This very particular terroir, combined with a favorable microclimate, gives the wines a distinctive character and excellent aging potential. The most famous vineyard site in the appellation is Côte du Py , renowned for producing dense, profound Morgon wines with remarkable structure.

The granite and schist soils give the Gamay a more serious, almost "Burgundian" expression, while retaining its legendary fruitiness. Controlled yields and traditional winemaking allow for generous cuvées, where ripe cherry, plum, stone fruit, sweet spices, and sometimes a characteristic mineral touch are expressed.

A wine with character and delicious pairings

Morgon stands out from other Beaujolais crus due to its body and depth. While it can be enjoyed young for its fruity generosity, it reveals its full complexity after a few years of aging, developing tertiary aromas reminiscent of Pinot Noir. This ability to "morgonize," that is, to evolve towards more refined notes, is what makes the appellation famous.

The food and wine pairings are numerous: fine charcuterie, grilled meats, roast poultry, Lyonnaise cuisine, soft cheeses such as Reblochon or Camembert. A Morgon from the Côte du Py will also perfectly complement a rabbit stew or a veal roast with mushrooms.
