Located in Sorgues, south of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château Gigognan spans 110 hectares across four major appellations: Châteauneuf-du-Pape (40 ha), Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Signargues (25 ha), Côtes-du-Rhône Villages (20 ha), and Côtes-du-Rhône (25 ha). The estate lies on exceptional soils composed of rolled pebbles, red clay, and silica, deposited by the Rhône River since the Quaternary period. These pebbles, natural thermal regulators, release the heat stored at night, promoting optimal grape ripening. The geological diversity, moderate altitude, and proximity to the river impart freshness, structure, and aromatic complexity to the wines. Mediterranean influences, the Mistral wind, and abundant sunshine enhance the natural concentration of the grapes while preserving their acidic balance. The varied grape varieties allowed by the AOCs allow a range of creative blends, faithful to the southern identity of the Rhône.

Château Gigognan's roots stretch back to antiquity: according to tradition, a Roman legionary named Gigius gave his name to the estate, which is mentioned as early as 1178 under the name "Gigonius." Vines have been cultivated there since that time, as evidenced by fragments of amphorae and very old vines. The estate has served successively as a Roman temple, priory, castle, and seigniorial fief, enjoying considerable influence in the 17th and 18th centuries. In 2017, Jean-François Hénin, a businessman from Burgundy, passionate about Mourvèdre and son of the agricultural engineer Stéphane Hénin, acquired the estate. He embarked on a vast restructuring project: a new winery, complete renovation of the château, organic conversion of the vineyard, and the acquisition of exceptional new parcels from Maison Jaboulet. His ambition: to make Gigognan a model of excellence for the great wines of the Southern Rhône.
The vines have been cultivated using certified organic farming methods since 2018, with biodynamic practices being progressively integrated. Soil cultivation is mechanized, and cover crops are sown between the rows to promote biodiversity and microbial life. The harvest is done by hand, with meticulous sorting. The state-of-the-art, 1500 m² winery includes a fermentation room and a dedicated aging area, with an integrated wastewater treatment system. Vinification is carried out plot by plot with minimal intervention: gentle maceration, controlled fermentation, and aging tailored to the specific profile of each cuvée. The technical team, led by oenologist Emmanuel Laurent and cellar master Jenna Le Lay, works closely with renowned consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt to express the quintessence of the terroirs. Particular attention is also paid to hygiene, temperature management and analytical monitoring in order to guarantee precise, consistent and distinctive wines.
Since its acquisition by Jean-François Hénin, Château Gigognan has experienced a qualitative renaissance that has garnered critical acclaim. The Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines impress with their balance of power, freshness, and tannic finesse. The Côtes-du-Rhône Villages Signargues wines stand out for their unique character, marked by the reddened pebbles of the soil, stained by iron oxide. The white wines, often overlooked, are distinguished by their brilliance, texture, and aging potential. The estate's environmental commitment, technical rigor, and the team's dynamism have helped position Gigognan among the most promising properties in the Southern Rhône. The estate is also renowned for its hospitality, its vibrant wine tourism scene, and the quality of the events it hosts in an exceptional heritage setting.
Driven by a demanding yet respectful vision, Château Gigognan combines historical heritage, oenological innovation, and sustainable viticulture. From its centuries-old pebbles to its state-of-the-art winery, every detail contributes to the creation of great, vibrant, authentic, and profound wines, faithful reflections of their terroir and their time.
