Merlot: an iconic red grape variety known for its sweetness and roundness

Merlot is one of the most famous and widely planted red grape varieties in the world. Originating in Bordeaux, it is prized for its suppleness, charming fruitiness, and velvety texture. This grape variety produces approachable, elegant, and generous red wines that appeal to both casual drinkers and connoisseurs. It is often used in blends but also shines as a single varietal in many high-quality wines.

Origin and great terroirs

Merlot originated in Bordeaux, where it is particularly prevalent on the Right Bank, in prestigious appellations such as Saint-Émilion , Pomerol , and Fronsac . It thrives in clay soils, which impart its characteristic richness and roundness. Outside of France, Merlot is widely cultivated in Italy, the United States, Chile, Australia, and Argentina, where it produces a variety of wines, each with its own distinct appeal.

A fruity, supple and approachable profile

Merlot produces wines with a ruby color and a nose dominated by aromas of red fruits (cherry, strawberry, plum), sometimes with hints of violet or licorice. With aging, it develops more complex notes of leather, tobacco, cocoa, or truffle. On the palate, it is supple and round, with silky tannins, making it an easy-drinking wine, even young, but also suitable for aging in top vintages.

Food and wine pairings with Merlot

Merlot is a versatile companion at the table. It pairs perfectly with white meats, veal, roast poultry, dishes with sauces (beef bourguignon, blanquette), grilled vegetables, and soft cheeses like Brie or Reblochon. Its smooth tannins allow it to complement dishes with mild or slightly spicy flavors.
