Domaine Huguenot
Côte de Nuits – Burgundy
Domaine Huguenot passionately cultivates vines located in renowned appellations of the Côte de Nuits, in northern Burgundy. These include Marsannay, a truly rising appellation, Fixin with its lesser-known crus, and the prestigious Gevrey-Chambertin. These terroirs encompass a mosaic of soils: Jurassic limestone, marl rich in marine fossils, gravelly scree, and ancient alluvial deposits, giving each cuvée a unique character. The plots benefit from ideal exposures, between 260 and 390 meters in altitude, promoting optimal ripeness and natural freshness. Many prestigious vineyard sites are cultivated here, including Clos du Roy, Longeroies, Les Hervelets, and Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru.
Pinot Noir for red wines – Chardonnay for white wines
The Huguenot family has been linked to winemaking since 1800. This family heritage has been passed down through generations, thanks to prominent figures such as Roger, Jean-Louis, and today Philippe Huguenot, supported by his wife Valérie. It was in the 1960s that the estate truly took off, with the purchase of prestigious plots and the introduction of on-site bottling. Philippe, trained in Beaune and Dijon, took over the reins in 1993 with a respectful approach to the terroir and a forward-looking vision. Deeply committed to the ethics of the Independent Winemaker, the estate has been certified organic since 2019, following an initial conversion process begun in 2010. Despite a historic frost in 2016, the family persevered and reaffirmed its environmental commitment with unwavering dedication and rigor.
Vineyard work is carried out with meticulous precision. Each vine is pruned according to its vigor, each plot receives a suitable compost, and the entire soil is aerated through gentle tilling. Bud removal, trellising, and leaf thinning are done manually, with a focus on low yields and optimal concentration. The harvest is entirely manual, with rigorous double sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to retain only the finest berries. A portion of the whole bunches is retained depending on the vintage, adding complexity, freshness, and structure to the wines. Vinification is gentle, using indigenous yeasts and carefully controlled temperatures. Aging in Burgundy barrels (10 to 30% new) lasts from 12 to 18 months. For the white wines, pressing is slow, and aging in 500-liter barrels reveals the finesse of the Chardonnay.
Domaine Huguenot enjoys a solid reputation among both wine lovers and professionals. Featured in specialist guides and on the finest French and international tables, it actively contributes to the elevating status of Marsannay. The estate is also engaged in soil studies with geologist Françoise Vannier-Petit, as part of the application for Premier Cru classification of 14 Marsannay vineyards. This initiative confirms the estate's commitment to being both a driving force and an ambassador for its terroir.
Combining respect for tradition, technical modernization, and ecological responsibility, Domaine Huguenot distinguishes itself through a sincere and consistent approach to winemaking. Its unwavering commitment to showcasing Burgundy's terroirs, its mastery of Pinot Noir, and its meticulous attention to detail make it a benchmark estate for lovers of finesse and typicity.
