Montagne de Reims – Champagne
The estate is located in Sillery, a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims, one of the few to hold this prestigious distinction. The vineyard also extends into Mailly-Champagne, Puisieulx, and Verzenay, all renowned hilltop villages offering mineral-rich chalky soils. These soils, composed of pure chalk and fine clay, impart finesse, minerality, and structure to the wines. Each plot is cultivated with meticulous care, allowing for an authentic and faithful expression of each cru's characteristics. This viticultural heritage is further enhanced by an average vine age of approximately 40 years, ensuring concentration and consistency.
The estate primarily cultivates Pinot Noir, the signature grape variety of the Montagne de Reims, which accounts for approximately two-thirds of the vineyard. The remaining third is dedicated to Chardonnay, bringing freshness, tension, and elegance to the blends. This balanced distribution allows the house to offer structured, luscious, yet always refined champagnes.
François Secondé is the very embodiment of a self-taught and passionate winemaker. Born in Sillery, he left school at 14 to dedicate himself to the vineyards. After several years as a vineyard worker, he rented his first plot, then bought his own vines in 1972. In 1976, he leased 3 hectares and launched his champagne production as a grower-producer, alongside his wife, Anne-Marie. He then founded his own house: Champagne François Secondé. Today, he is the sole champagne producer in Sillery, upholding a rare tradition: that of a Grand Cru made entirely within the village.
The house's philosophy is based on a faithful transmission of Champagne tradition, combined with a constant pursuit of precision. Respectful of his terroir and his roots, François Secondé works his vines with humility and rigor, always seeking the perfect balance between power and finesse, typicity and modernity.
Champagne François Secondé is crafted with meticulous attention to detail, respecting natural rhythms and the highest quality standards. The harvest is entirely done by hand, allowing for a rigorous selection of only the finest grapes. In the cellar, vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, ensuring precise temperature management and preserving the fruit's freshness.
Fermentation is slow, and extended lees aging is practiced to develop the aromatic complexity and texture of the wines. The estate chooses aging in tanks rather than oak barrels to preserve the purity and precision of the Pinot Noir. Certain cuvées benefit from extended aging on lees, resulting in a fine, silky mousse and a well-developed structure. Dosage is always moderate, in order to best respect the expression of the terroir and allow the wine to speak for itself.
Over the years, the estate has acquired a solid reputation among connoisseurs, sommeliers, and wine critics. Its wines are regularly praised for their remarkable balance, aromatic intensity, and ability to age gracefully. The Grand Cru cuvée, made exclusively from Sillery grapes, brilliantly expresses the depth of Pinot Noir and the tension of Chardonnay. Aromas of red fruit, white flowers, and mineral notes offer a rich and complex tasting experience.
The Blanc de Blancs cuvée, a rare find in the Montagne de Reims, captivates with its lemony freshness, precise palate, and saline elegance. As for the classic blends, they reveal a distinctive personality, perfect for pairing with roasted poultry, aged cheeses, or grilled fish.
Champagne François Secondé is thus recognized as a discreet but essential house, which embodies an artisanal, precise and sincere Champagne, a thousand leagues away from industrial standards.
