Domaine Frédéric Magnien – The quintessence of the Côte de Nuits terroirs

Domain name

Domaine Frédéric Magnien

Wine region

Burgundy, Côte de Nuits

Appellations and terroirs

The estate spans 19 hectares in the heart of the most prestigious appellations of the Côte de Nuits: Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Charmes-Chambertin, as well as numerous Premier Cru vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Chambolle-Musigny. The clay-limestone soils, the well-exposed slopes, and the geological diversity allow for a faithful and nuanced expression of each terroir. Each parcel is vinified separately, following a rigorous plot-by-plot approach.

Iconic grape varieties

Pinot noir exclusively, the king of grape varieties in the Côte de Nuits, worked here with precision and finesse to reveal the unique identity of each terroir.

Philosophy and History

Coming from a long line of winemakers, Frédéric Magnien represents the fifth generation of the family. He joined the family estate in 1993, which was founded by his father, Michel Magnien, between 1967 and 1991. Since then, Frédéric has dedicated himself to bottling all the grapes on-site and has developed a philosophy focused on the authenticity of the terroir, while respecting tradition. The estate is currently undergoing conversion to organic farming, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and precision in winemaking.

Production specifics

The vines, aged 25 to 60 years, are cultivated with meticulous care: careful pruning, bud thinning, manual tilling, and exclusively manual harvesting with rigorous sorting. Vinification is traditional and plot-by-plot, with cold maceration, gentle punch-downs, natural fermentation, and aging in French oak barrels (20 to 40% new) for 12 to 18 months. The aging process aims to enhance the aromas without masking the character of the terroir.

Recognitions

The estate's wines are regularly praised by critics (Bettane & Desseauve Guide, RVF, Decanter, etc.), with high scores for the most emblematic vintages. They impress with their finesse, aromatic intensity, and remarkable aging potential.

Combining modern precision and deep respect for tradition, Domaine Frédéric Magnien has established itself as an essential reference in the Côte de Nuits, for lovers of refined and elegant Pinot Noir.
